So we love cut flowers! We give genuine smiles, our mood is lifted and a warm and sharing environment is created!
Nature has provided us with a simple way to improve our mood according to behavioural research conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
The research findings bring new scientific backing to the old traditional flowers and chocolates!
- Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.
- Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.
- Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.
- “Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room,” said Dr. Haviland-Jones. “They make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere.”
This is my favourite anecdotal bit of the study – Some participants in the study responded with such unexpected emotional displays the scientists were unprepared to measure them!
“We received attractive “Thank you” cards and letters from several participants who received flowers for allowing them to be in the study, some with photographs of the flowers, one with multiple photographs to show the continuing beauty of the bouquet. In many years of studying emotions, we have never received hugs and kisses, thank you notes or photographs, not even for candy, doughnuts, decorated shirts or hats, gift certificates, or direct monetary payment; the flowers are different”
So we do love flowers, even when we are expecting them and they have a longer-lasting emotional effect on our happiness than many other gifts!
