My favourite customised pieces are the pieces I’ve made for my friends and family.
Of course there is pressure in choosing something special to say to my love ones, to mark their special occasions. I like to cheat and choose someone else’s words like lyrics or poetry that the recipient has already chosen for their special occasion – sneaky.
My favourite for weddings is to take a line from their first dance, I like to choose the less obvious line but something that will resonate with the bride and groom.
Due to the blessing of a bad memory I usually plan to video the first dance of a wedding, weddings being an Irish occasion of celebration I sometimes don’t remember the details among all the singing, dancing and drinking.
I’ve been writing in clay with a strange mismatched letterset for over 6 years now. Yes it is a completely odd set, it is a mix of maybe 5 or 6 sets, some letters I have 5 versions of and some I have only one. My poor wee letter K is very lonely and very small and I have a great big giant T which regularly unbalances my words.
I love finding new lyrics and quotes and it’s one of the nicest things about making pieces for others. I often come across a new quote which makes me smile or makes me tear up. In 6 years I have put all sorts on my pieces from Madonna lyrics to Shakepeare right through to a Prayer. I did worry when impressing the prayer as I couldn’t find a capital g for God.
