At Sarah McKenna Ceramics, our commitment to sustainability is as deeply ingrained as the textures and sentiments in our pottery.
Sustainable Materials and Resource Efficiency
We are dedicated to using eco-friendly materials and minimising waste in every step of our process. Our clay is sourced from the reputable Northern Irish company Scarva, ensuring quality and sustainability. Each piece of pottery is slab-built with a focus on minimising waste, and any waste clay is meticulously reclaimed. Our production process uses minimal water, reflecting our commitment to conserving this precious resource.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Our studio has a modern, energy-efficient electric kiln, significantly reducing our energy consumption. Furthermore, we have partnered with a renewable energy company to power our workshop, ensuring our operations have a minimal carbon footprint.
Eco-friendly Packaging and Shipping
To reduce our environmental impact, we use plastic-free, recycled, and fully recyclable packaging materials. Honeycomb paper replaces traditional bubble wrap; our parcels are shipped in plain brown boxes and paper. We ship our products using An Post, which uses electric vehicles.
Longevity and Timeless Design
Our pottery is designed to withstand the test of time, becoming cherished heirlooms with minimal environmental impact. Creating timeless designs encourages long-term use and reduces the environmental impact associated with short-lived trends.
Ethical Practices and Community Engagement
We believe in supporting our local community and fostering fair labour practices. Our small team at Bridge Street Studios includes myself, my production assistant Avril, and Finn, who assists with glazing. We are proud to be a true small-batch pottery business, with each piece starting from a bag of wet clay and crafted with care.
